The Atal Tunnel (about 9 km long) runs under the Rohtang Pass and connects Manali with Sissu in Lahaul. Since it opened in 2020, it has become the easiest way to see snow from Manali, especially in winter when Rohtang is closed.

01Distance and time
- Manali to the south portal (Dhundi side): about 25 km, 45–60 minutes
- Through the tunnel: about 10 minutes
- North portal to Sissu: about 15 km
- A relaxed day trip from Manali takes 6–8 hours with stops at Solang
02Best time to visit
December to March is the time for snow at Sissu and around the north portal. April to June has melting snow and green valleys. After heavy snowfall the road may close for a few hours or a day while it is cleared, so keep a flexible day.
03Tips for the day trip
- Start early to avoid traffic at Solang and the tunnel
- Only registered local taxis may be allowed beyond certain points in peak snow; follow police instructions
- Carry warm layers, gloves and waterproof shoes
- Sissu has small cafés and the Sissu waterfall; snow activities are paid on the spot
- Do not stop inside the tunnel
