It is also the busiest week of the year, so a little planning makes a big difference.
01Will there be snow on New Year?
Snow in Manali town at the end of December is not guaranteed. Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel / Sissu side get snow more reliably, and January–February is the surest snow season. Plan the trip for the hills and the festive mood — and treat fresh snowfall as a bonus.
02Traffic and road closures
In recent years the days around Christmas and New Year have seen long traffic jams between Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel, and the roads beyond are closed after heavy snow. Go to Solang early in the morning, keep a flexible day, and follow the local police advisories.
03Where to stay
- Mall Road area: walk to the New Year crowd and cafés; noisy on 31 Dec.
- Old Manali: cafés, music and a younger crowd.
- Aleo, Prini, Hadimba side: quieter hotels for families.
- Solang / Palchan / Burwa: closer to the snow, resorts with their own gala dinners.
