Winter turns Kashmir white. Gulmarg is the most reliable place for snow from late December to February, and Srinagar often gets snowfall too.

01Chillai Kalan

The 40 coldest days, Chillai Kalan, run roughly from 21 December to 31 January. Expect sub-zero nights, frozen edges on Dal Lake and occasional road or flight disruption after heavy snow.

02Planning tips

  • Keep a buffer day for weather.
  • Choose hotels with central heating; houseboats use heaters and electric blankets.
  • Sonamarg and Pahalgam roads can close after snowfall.

03Packing list

  • Thermals, a down jacket, gloves and a woollen cap
  • Waterproof boots (snow boots can be rented in Gulmarg)
  • Lip balm, moisturiser and sunglasses
