Ladakh tour guide: best time, route and tips

Ladakh is a high-altitude desert of monasteries, turquoise lakes and some of the highest motorable passes in the world. Most travellers combine Leh with Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and, if time allows, Tso Moriri or Hanle. Because Leh sits at about 3,500 m, every good Ladakh itinerary starts with rest, not sightseeing.

We plan Ladakh tour packages from Delhi as fly-in trips to Leh, and as road trips from Manali or Srinagar for travellers who want to cross the passes. Group departures run through the summer; private trips can be built for families, couples and bikers.

Best time to visit Ladakh

May to September is the main season. The Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways usually open between May and June and close by October, depending on snow. July and August are the warmest months; June and September are quieter with clear skies. Winter (December–February) is for experienced travellers only, with temperatures far below zero.

How to reach Leh from Delhi

Direct flights from Delhi to Leh take about 1 hour 20 minutes and are the easiest option. By road, Delhi–Manali–Leh takes three to four days with night halts at Manali and Jispa or Sarchu; Delhi–Srinagar–Leh goes via Sonamarg, Zojila and Kargil. Road routes help with acclimatisation; flying in needs two full rest days in Leh.

How many days do you need?

Plan at least 6 nights for Leh, Nubra and Pangong when you fly in. A road trip from Manali or Srinagar needs 9 to 11 days. Add two days for Tso Moriri or Hanle, and one buffer day for weather or road closures.

Permits, health and packing

Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri and other border areas need a protected-area permit and environment fee, which we arrange with your booking. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first two days, and speak to your doctor about altitude medicine before you travel. Carry warm layers even in summer, sunscreen, sunglasses and a basic medical kit. Mobile networks outside Leh are limited; postpaid connections work best.

What a Ladakh package includes

A typical package covers hotel or camp stays, breakfast and dinner, an SUV or tempo traveller with an experienced local driver, permits, and sightseeing such as Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Hall of Fame, Magnetic Hill, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, Diskit, Hunder sand dunes and Pangong. Flights, bike rentals and oxygen cylinders can be added on request.

Ladakh tour package FAQs

Is Ladakh safe for families and senior citizens?

Yes, with a slower itinerary. We keep two rest days in Leh, choose heated rooms where possible and avoid long drives on consecutive days. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should take medical advice first.

Can we do a Ladakh bike trip?

Yes. We arrange Royal Enfield bikes, a backup vehicle for luggage, a mechanic and a road captain for group bike trips from Manali or Leh.

Do Indian travellers need a permit for Pangong and Nubra?

Yes, a protected-area permit with environment fee is needed for these areas. We apply for it once you share ID details.
