A night on a kettuvallam — Kerala’s converted rice-barge houseboat — is the moment most travellers remember. Both Alleppey (Alappuzha) and Kumarakom sit on the same Vembanad backwater system, but they feel quite different.

02How a houseboat day works

  1. Board around noon; lunch is served on board.
  2. Cruise through canals and paddy fields in the afternoon, with a tea stop.
  3. Boats moor for the night by early evening (local rules limit night cruising).
  4. Dinner and a quiet evening on deck.
  5. Breakfast and a short morning cruise before check-out around 9 am.

03Choosing the right boat

  • Bedrooms: 1-bedroom boats suit couples; families need 2–3 bedrooms
  • Category: deluxe, premium and luxury differ mainly in room size and upper-deck space
  • Sharing: a private boat means only your group on board
  • Meals: Kerala-style meals are standard; ask for vegetarian or Jain food in advance

04Day cruise or overnight?

A day cruise (4–6 hours) is good if you are short on time, but the overnight stay — sunset, silence and an early-morning glide past waking villages — is what makes the experience. Our Kumarakom and Alleppey backwater escape and Munnar and Kumarakom couple retreat include it.
