Group or private — which is cheaper overall?

For one or two people, a group tour is almost always cheaper. For a family of 5–6, a private tour often costs nearly the same per person and gives you your own vehicle, your own pace and flexible dates. That is why most families with elders choose private.

Hotel categories explained

In the mountains, a 'deluxe' hotel in Guptkashi is not the same as a deluxe hotel in Delhi. Expect clean rooms, hot water and simple vegetarian meals in standard categories; premium categories add bigger rooms and better views but cost more. At Kedarnath itself, accommodation is mostly camps or basic rooms whatever you pay.

Questions to ask before you pay an advance

1. Is the price per person or per package, and for how many travellers?
2. Which hotels (or similar) are planned for each night?
3. Which meals are included each day?
4. Are pony, palki, helicopter and shuttle charges included or extra?
5. What is the cancellation policy if roads close or the yatra is suspended?

A genuine operator will answer all of these in writing. Be careful with anyone selling "confirmed helicopter tickets" or VIP darshan outside the official systems — these are common scams during peak season.
